With the growth of “big data” in many fields, it is increasingly important for surgical educators and researchers to visually curate the presentation of data in a way that captures people’s attention, provides information quickly, and explains complicated concepts.

Surgeons do not need to be graphic design experts to improve their visual storytelling skills. They just need some knowledge about user-friendly open source infographic and data viz tools, a little bit of creativity, and a chance to practice.

This website was initially designed for our workshop at the 2017 Association of Surgical Education meeting titled “Infographics and Data Viz: An Introduction to Open Source Tools for Visual Storytelling in Surgical Education and Research.

These resources were designed to help introduce workshop participants and interested surgical educators to the world of informational design. But it is our hope that this website will continue to provide information and inspiration to increase the data viz literacy in our field moving forward.
